Contemporary Silver Metal Kiwi Bird Charity Artwork

Art Fundraiser for “Save the Kiwi” Month, October 2021 – New Zealand artists help save the Coromandel Brown Kiwi

Two New Zealand artists, both passionate about conservation and protecting our precious Kiwi Bird, came together to create a one-of-a-kind, contemporary silver metal Kiwi Bird artwork to help raise funds for “Save the Kiwi” Month, October 2021.

Tauranga Metal Artist, Ninette Kruger and Auckland-based NZ Contemporary artist, Anna Mollekin collaborated to create this original silver metal Kiwi bird wall artwork.

A percentage of the proceeds will be donated to the Moehau Environment Group’s Kiwi sanctuary, to help protect the Coromandel Brown Kiwi.

According to the NZ Department of Conservation, there are only about 68,000 Kiwi birds left in New Zealand. We’re losing 2% of our unmanaged kiwi every year – that’s around 20 per week…

Nationally, Kiwi birds are in trouble. The main culprits are stoats and cats which kill 70% of kiwi chicks. If nothing is done, Kiwi faces extinction in the wild within 30 years.

Yet in the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand, kiwi populations are flourishing due to intensive predator control efforts by the Moehau Environment Group.

Their Kiwi Sanctuary has 920 traps spread over 10,400 hectares. Since its establishment in 2005, they have caught over 1750 stoats, 815 weasels, 12,800 rats, 270 hedgehogs and 35 feral cats, making a huge difference to the breeding success of resident Kiwi. Traps are baited with donated eggs or salted rabbit meat and are currently checked 12 times a year.

Ninette & Anna decided to combine their shared passion for conservation and art to create a one-of-a-kind pewter Kiwi bird artwork that could be auctioned to raise awareness and funds for this worthy cause.

Ninette translated Anna’s Kiwi bird drawing onto the pewter metal sheet by hand-embossing the design as a 3-Dimensional Pewter Artwork. Herewith are some close-up detail of this unique silver and copper metal Kiwi Bird art piece.

The significance of Kiwi’s Lace to Tauranga pewter artist, Ninette Kruger

I really enjoyed embossing Anna’s ‘Kiwi’s Lace’ drawing with its gorgeous detail as it reminded me of how uniquely each of us is created, and how important each piece of creation is, and how specifically it was designed to fit within a greater purpose.

It reminded me of the delicate balance between Kiwi’s and their indigenous habitat, and how vulnerable they are with predators.

This piece is also a celebration piece to me, my biggest embossing project to date, and such a wonderful statement piece with its copper highlights.

I was filled with gratitude and wonder at the beautiful friendship that I formed with Anna (whom I haven’t met in person yet), just because both of us were willing to take a chance on collaborating. We have learned so much from each other and on this journey, and that is something I am deeply grateful for.

Contemporary artist, Anna Mollekin’s love of New Zealand inspired this unique Kiwi bird metal artwork.

“I wanted to celebrate our country and its beautiful flora and fauna. New Zealand is the fabric of my being”, says Anna.

The lace also reflects the delicate and intertwined connection between the native New Zealand birds and it’s habitat.

This New Zealand contemporary artwork depicts a stylised Kiwi bird amongst beautiful flora.
